     Charlie Hamel has taught land navigation/map and compass as part of Maine Guide courses in Maine. The focus is on the "You" in this presentation. What is it that you want, or need, or must have in regards to the GPS, the map, and the compass? And furthermore how they all relate to each other. Charlie will address many of the navigation systems used, with emphasis on Latitude/Longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator Systems. Also, how to use the template for readings in degrees/minutes/seconds and grid coordinates will be discussed.

     Arctic Scandinavia offers some of the most beautiful and distinctive scenery in the world. This new presentation by Lena Conlan, Crossing Latitudes, will take you sea kayaking in the Norwegian Sea and reindeer packing in the mountains. Through slides and film you will experience the ever-changing play of lights on the jagged mountains and the storm tossed seas. Come and enjoy the wicked Malstrom, orcas, midnight sun, northern lights, deep sea rafting and the great people of the Arctic.
     Last summer the Swedish federal TV station joined Crossing Latitudes on a Women's Sea Kayaking Expedition in Arctic Norway. Lena will show 10 minutes from this fun program. This is a fun, inspirational and educational presentation about paddling and hiking in the Land of Extreme Beauty:

He has been to the wrong places with the wrong people at the wrong time of year and he claims to have made almost every mistake that is possible. He has taken bodies down rivers in coffins, and been attacked by mice and explored 'ghostly' caves. This humorous talk will delight anyone who enjoys yarns of the sea.

Join Scott for an Alaskan slide show and demonstrations on how to travel comfortable in the rain. Learn how to choose the proper clothing, tents, and outdoor gear to enjoy an adventure even if the weather is not perfect!

Join professional fisherman Jerry Sparks, owner of Northeast Kayak and Guide Services, as he goes over the tips and techniques of fishing from a kayak. Jerry will talk about the advantages of getting off the shoreline and into a kayak to get to those hidden spots where the lunkers are sitting awaiting their next meal. Kayak fishing is an emerging part of the sport, with many companies now building boats specifically made with the angler in mind. Stop by and pick up a tip or two!

     Since most of our paddling is done in the forward direction, this is the most important stroke to perfect. Topics include sitting positions and posture, grip of the paddle, arm and torso mechanics, stroke length and the path of the paddle. You will learn to adjust your stroke to increase power for short distances, conserve energy over the long haul and deal with various conditions such as wind and waves. This clinic will cover techniques for both standard touring paddles and high performance wing paddles.
