SEA KAYAKING CLASSES


Essential Strokes and Rescues

For beginning sea kayakers. You’ll learn to paddle comfortably, safely and efficiently in a sea kayak. The emphasis is on strokes for propelling your kayak in a smooth and efficient manner and feeling stable on the water. Includes instruction on wet exits, self rescue and assisted rescue techniques. This course will give you the confidence to be comfortable and relaxed in your boat while wearing a spray skirt. For sea kayaks and day-touring kayaks.

$110 includes all equipment; $90 with your own

9 am - 4 pm (first 1/2 hour is boat fitting and set up) Saturdays and Sundays in May through September; dates to be announced in early 2012


Boat Control and Rolling Primer

For advanced beginner and intermediate paddlers. Learn and practice good boat control using strokes and maneuvers in a sea kayak: edging, J-leans, J-lean turns, low, high and sculling braces, bow rudder, stern rudder, and sculling, stationary and hanging draw strokes.  Practice hip snaps, bow rescues, get comfortable upside down in your kayak and learn the steps to roll your kayak in the latter part of the class, with assistance in half roll with paddle extension and hip snap to upright position and progressing to roll from an underwater set up. For sea kayaks and day touring kayaks with skirts.

Recommended prior experience/ requirements: Essential Strokes and Rescue Class or equivalent instruction

Greenland and Traditional Qajaq Skills

Learn traditional Inuit kayaking skills. Understand the history of the Alaska, Canadian and Greenland Inuit kayaking culture and the development and use of traditional kayaks and gear. On-water instruction will include traditional paddling skills, such as using a traditional paddle, strokes, side sculling, and balance brace. Greenland-style rolling skills will also be covered, from beginning layback rolls (arm crook and shotgun) and advanced layback rolls (butterfly, norsaq and hand rolls), to beginning forward finishing rolls (chest scull and reverse sweep).

Recommended prior experience: Intermediate kayaking instruction such as our Boat Control and Rolling Primer--please call if you have any questions.
